5 Things I Would Never Do as a Blog Writer and Strategist

When it comes to marketing of any kind, there are lots of opinions out there. You see things all over social media and oftentimes it makes you wonder… “SHOULD I be doing it that way? Maybe I should try that. Is that strategy outdated?”

Whether you’re searching for social media ideas, email marketing strategies, or just general business advice, there are so many tips, tricks, and the latest “hack” that makes you feel like you need to do things differently.

Typically when I see blanket marketing advice, I take it with a grain of salt and try my best to just stick with what I know and what feels right to me.

But as a blog writer and strategist that teaches creative business owners how to implement blogging in their business as a way to work smarter, not harder in their content marketing, there are a few things I would simply NEVER do – and I encourage you to consider these too.

5 Things I Would Never Do as a Blog Writer and Strategist

  • I would never blog just for SEO purposes.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – blogging in your business should be for more reasons than just SEO.

Don’t get me wrong, populating higher in Google search results for your industry is great and there’s nothing wrong with that being a goal of yours, but it seems like the online business world has gotten it twisted somewhere along the way.

Blog content isn’t just for the rankings.

Blog content isn’t just something you do because you want to get on page 1 of Google.

Blog content isn’t just for SEO.

It’s about SO much more than that!

I teach people to treat blogs as the core part of their marketing and let that content guide what you do everywhere else. It’s a working smarter, not harder content marketing approach that allows SEO to become a cherry on top of everything else!

  • I would never let ChatGPT write my entire blog post.

Listen, I’m all for making my life easier when I can and using AI definitely has a time and place for your business.

But that time and that place is not for writing the entirety of your blog content!

Can AI be a tool to HELP write your blog content? Sure thing! But in my professional opinion, ChatGPT and other AI tools don’t do your brand voice justice and the blog content that it creates is essentially just regurgitated information from Google.

If you really want your blog content to be impactful for your audience AND truly sound like you, I encourage you to use AI to help you generate content ideas and outlines for your content rather than asking it to write the content for you.

  • I would never write my blogs without a strategic quarterly plan.

I’m passionate about a lot of things concerning blog content in your business, but one of the things that always climbs high on that list is having a quarterly blog content plan.

And trust me, I get it – a quarter’s worth of content can feel like a LOT. I mean after all, that’s 3 whole months! But just hear me out:

A lot of times business owners view blog content as just another thing on their to-do list that they need to check off each week. This is often because they believe that blogs on their website are ONLY for SEO purposes.

And like I mentioned above, YES I want you to populate higher in Google searches and YES, that can happen when you implement blogs consistently, but NO, that is not my primary focus for you.

There is a way you can implement blogs in your business strategically, so you not only boost your search engine visibility, but you also stay relevant, generate leads and even convert readers into customers.

The only way this can happen is when you PLAN accordingly, which is why having a quarterly blog content calendar is a must.

When you plan your blog content quarterly, you’re able to zoom out, look at a calendar for the next three months and align your blog content strategically and intentionally with what’s going on in the world AND in your business.

For example, if you’re launching a new course in December, you can ensure that you have pre-launch blog content planned that prepares your audience for what’s to come.

Additionally, you can look ahead and ensure that your content aligns with important events, holidays, or industry trends that keeps you timely and relevant in the eyes of your audience and maximizes your engagement.

I could talk about this one for days, but instead let me point you to a few other places for more resources on my quarterly planning process:

I have a saying that I’ve grown known for and that is: blogs first, socials second.

And it’s not because I hate social media – trust, I LOVE the ‘gram! But I don’t love feeling like I have to create social media content from scratch every single time. And I really don’t love that the content I post on social media has a veryyyyy short shelf life.

That’s why I start with my blog content first and let that guide what I do everywhere else! It’s the content marketing funnel that I preach, teach, and follow that really can help you work smarter, not harder.

  • I would never let someone convince me that blogs are boring and outdated.

Nothing fires me up more than when I hear someone say, “blogs are dead! No one reads them!”

OH… really?! Then let me ask you… when you Google something, what comes up?

BLOG POSTS!

Whether you realize it or not, you’re actually probably reading blogs more often than you think.

For example, when you’re searching for “best email marketing strategies,” “how to start a business,” or even “quick dinner recipes,” chances are, the top results are blog articles written by real people sharing their expertise.

Sure, I’ll be real with you and admit that blogs aren’t flashy. They don't come with fancy filters or trending sounds. But they WORK.

They position you as an expert, boost your SEO, give you endless content to repurpose, and help you connect with your audience on a deeper level than a 15-second video ever could.

Blogs aren’t dead, they’ve simply evolved and let me just tell you, they’re THRIVING for business owners!

They provide in-depth, searchable, and evergreen content that platforms like Instagram or TikTok simply can’t replicate. They’re also a powerful way to establish authority, connect with your audience, and get found by people who need what you offer.

And I would never let someone convince me otherwise.

So there ya have it – the 5 things I would never do as a blog writer and strategist!

While trends in content marketing may shift, the core principles of blogging for your business remain the same. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can build a blog that not only attracts readers, but keeps them coming back for more.
